The Tire Making Process - Diamond Back Classic Radials
The tire making process employed by Diamond Back Classic Radials begins with the mounting of the tire on a specialized machine that rotates it at high speed. The sidewall surface is then roughened using proprietary attachments to eliminate its smoothness. This preparatory process allows for the immediate identification of any tire abnormalities due to the accuracy of the machine and its high rotational speed. Additionally, since Diamond Back Classic Radials uses major manufacturers, the rejection rate is negligible.
Vulcanization is a critical aspect of the process as it creates a permanent bond between the white wall and the tire. The vulcanization equipment occupies an entire section of the facility. This ensures that the white wall is a permanent feature of the tire, and separating the two would result in damage to the tire itself. The material is then trimmed to the desired width using laser-guided finishers, which maintains close tolerances.
The versatility of Diamond Back Classic Radials' process is due to the fact that they can add white walls or color stripes to any tire, including those of varying sizes, with meticulous quality control. The trimming of each white wall or redline is customized to the desired width, ensuring that the whitewalls are proportionately correct for the front and rear tires, even if they are of different sizes.
High-speed finishing enables prompt identification of any tire trueness issues (runout). The operator can spot it right away and reject the tire. With this process, the final product is aesthetically pleasing and smooth, delivering a high-quality product to the customer.

When you get your hands on Diamond Back Classics, you’ll quickly notice how easy they are to keep clean. Unlike other whitewalls that can become dull or yellow over time, our tires are built with a butyl lining that prevents chemicals from seeping into the white material. This means that you only need to wipe away surface dirt when cleaning them. We recommend using an abrasive cleaning pad or a fine/medium sanding sponge for the best results, which can be found at your local hardware store.
You can use any good cleaner to keep your Diamond Back Classics shining bright, including Castro!, Super Clean, 409, Simple Green, and Greased Lightning, just to name a few. However, it's best to avoid cleaners with bleach, as they can dry out the whitewall surface with prolonged use. Also, steer clear of using products like Armor All on your whitewalls, as they may cause a slight discoloration.
Keep in mind that whitewall surfaces can dry out over time due to factors like heat and ozone exposure. To maintain the tire's beauty, we recommend giving them a good scrub periodically to get rid of the dry surface. Don't be afraid to put in some elbow grease!

5/8″ wide raised ring on the out edge of the whitewall. It adds a touch of elegance and gives radials a bias-ply look. It is available on most Diamond Back Classic Radials catalogue items.

Modern tires designed with p-metric radials are built to handle higher air pressure which reduces rolling resistance, helps prevent heat buildup, and enhances steering response. Maintaining proper air pressure can also protect your car's whitewalls from damage. However, specific air pressure recommendations cannot be made for every application. Typically, a cold tire setting of 35 psi is a good starting point for most applications. It's important to note that air pressure can fluctuate with temperature changes, so frequent pressure checks are recommended, especially before long trips.
For street-rodders who often use smaller front tires or for resto-rodders who prefer a certain look with thinner tires, we suggest using higher air pressures. Diamond Back provides a wide range of smaller radials specifically designed to handle higher air pressures, such as "H" or "T" speed-rated tires. Remember, your front tires are doing most of the work, so choosing tires designed for higher pressure, such as those with 40-45 psi ratings, should be considered.

The blue protectant that we use on our tires is water soluble. In order to remove it, simply soak the tire with water and let it sit for a few minutes. All the blue should dissolve. If some blue is left, use a wet sponge and scrub. No cleaning solution is needed and in fact, it could create more difficulties. Do not use soap.
How Specialty Tire Companies Bring Classic Tires to Life
When buying specialty tires for classic cars, one might assume that the big brand name on the sidewall indicates that the tire was made by that company. However, according to industry experts, it's unlikely that big-name manufacturers still produce whitewall, redline, or other similar specialty sidewall tires. Instead, they often sell their outdated moulds to smaller factories, many of which are located in foreign countries. These moulds are then used to produce tires with the big brand name still on them, but they're not made by the original manufacturer. While this practice is legal, it's important to note that radial tires require precise manufacturing and updated moulds to ensure their quality. Therefore, it's best to inquire about the origin of the tire rather than assuming that the name on the sidewall indicates the manufacturer.
Important Information
Do not lean or stack whitewalls
Whitewall tires are vulnerable to unsightly staining. The main culprits of whitewall damage are leaning and stacking. When you purchase new tires, they come equipped with several chemicals, including a small amount of mould release from the manufacturer. These chemicals can cause irreversible staining on your whitewalls. Once stained, the yellowing cannot be removed with cleaning. Therefore, it is important to handle and store whitewall tires with extra care to avoid any unwanted damage.
Measuring
When measuring the width of a whitewall, the tire should be inflated since the width can vary up to 1/16 of an inch due to several factors. Additionally, the rim flange coverage may also slightly affect the whitewall width since not all wheel flanges are identical.
How to solve balance problems
Our products rarely have balancing issues, but in case they do, here are some useful pointers:
Rim tolerance should always be checked. Even if you have purchased new rims, it does not guarantee their perfection. Rims have two components - the hoop and the center - and if these two parts are not welded together flawlessly, it may appear that the tire is not round or crooked.
Be cautious of the center hole in the rim. The center hole is non-functional and can be slightly off-center, particularly with new rims. The bolt holes, not the center hole, center the rim. Most modern tire shops use mounting hardware to center the tire/wheel assembly onto the balancer using bolt holes, a technique known as lug-centric balancing. Always utilize this method!
Minor issues can be fixed by removing the tire from the wheel, rotating the tire 180 degrees on the wheel, and lubricating the tire beads to ensure proper seating and re-balancing. This procedure can be incredibly helpful.
Always utilize qualified shops with well-calibrated equipment!
